Hawthorn English Language Centre was established in March 1986 as part of the Hawthorn Institute of Education, originally opening with a single class for international students. It was created to provide quality English language instruction and pathways for students planning to continue their studies in Australia.
In its early years the centre expanded its curriculum, introducing a wider range of courses such as General English, English for Academic Purposes, Business English and IELTS Preparation.
In 1990 the centre became affiliated with the University of Melbourne, strengthening its academic preparation programs. By the late 1990s it was fully incorporated into the University’s network, reflecting deeper collaboration in academic English education.
In 2000 a High School Preparation Program (now called English for High School) was launched to help students build skills for secondary education.
A significant change occurred in 2007 when the centre was acquired by the education provider Navitas and officially renamed Hawthorn-Melbourne. Under this new ownership, Hawthorn-Melbourne continued to specialise in English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), launching the University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program (UMELBP) the following year.
In January 2024 the school relocated from its original Hawthorn campus to a modern facility in Melbourne’s CBD (at Exhibition Street), positioning it closer to the University of Melbourne and other academic partners.
Today, Hawthorn-Melbourne continues to prepare international students for further academic study, professional advancement and successful integration into English-speaking environments.
